Tarpley, Natasha Harlem Charade, 320 pages. Scholastic, 2017. $17.
Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (some danger).
After Jin sees a girl from her school leave a free bus pass
hidden at Jin’s family bodega, she forces her way into a friendship with the
mysterious girl. The pair meet Elvin,
who has just move to Harlem, New York, to live with his grandfather while he
mother is starting cancer treatments.
But his grandfather has been injured and Elvin is trying to avoid Family
Services. All three become wrapped up in
an old mystery that may affect the future of their neighborhood.
For kids who like Blue Balliet’s art mysteries, this is a
good next offering. Jin and her friends
are likable characters, Harlem makes a great supporting character, and the mystery is more than just art related.
EL, MS – OPTIONAL.
