Johnston, Tony. A Small Thing… But Big, PICTURE BOOK. Roaring Book Press, 2016. $17.99.
While Lizzie’s mom reads on a park bench, Lizzie plays and plays. Suddenly, she runs next to a dog. She is very nervous but the dog’s owner, a kind man, answers all of Lizzie’s questions about his dog. He encourages her to pet the dog and walk her. Lizzie and the dog enjoy one another’s company and Lizzie is thrilled to be doing so many small, but big, things.
The pictures! The pictures in this book are just perfect. They match the sweetness and the bashfulness of the characters. The illustrator does a wonderful job demonstrating that although the little girl is speaking with a man at the park, the mother is always close by, watching, and she acknowledges the man at the beginning so that the reader (an older, adult, parent reader) doesn’t have to worry about Lizzie’s safety. I loved the cute little twist at the end as well.
