Although Lady Jane is only
seventeen, her life has already included a failed engagement and a marriage
ended after seven months. As a widower,
she is placed in the service of Queen Elizabeth and as the queen’s lady she is
entertained at court. She is delighted
to see Master James Lacey show up at court because she has always had her eye
on him, but Master Lacey has returned from war and is troubled by the
destruction he witnessed. Lacey
considers himself unworthy of Lady Jane’s love and plans on joining an
expedition to America in the hopes of freeing himself of his depression. However, Jane’s conniving father and mean
stepsons have other plans for Jane and if he leaves there may not be anything
left for him to come home to.
This is
the second book in the Lacey Chronicles, both books are fun to read, but they
can also stand on their own. The
characters are well developed and there is equal amounts of romance and
adventure to keep the reader entertained.
My only complaint is the amount of minor characters mentioned muddles
the important people to follow. Overall,
fun regency romance. There are a few
sexual references, but nothing to offensive.
