Don't Eat That! by Veronika Charles
Charles, Veronika, Don’t Eat That! Tundra, 2008. EARLY READER.
Ever wondered why your parents sometimes say “Don’t Eat That!” This book helps to explain just that. Through a handful of folktales, the author retells stories about why parents sometimes tell you not to eat things. From a story about a girl who eats pancakes her mother had made for a wolf to a boy whose life is endangered by some witches with relation to food, these tales will manage to gross you out if not make you uneasy about eating something you’re not supposed to.
An entertaining, yet gross collection of easy retellings of old folktales not popularly know in the United States. The illustrations are great, the text is simple, but still manages to capture the heart of the stories it retells. Readers who like folktales and fairy tales, gross books, or just want a quick read that’s Halloween-ish will enjoy reading this book. EL (K-3). ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, HUN Public Library.
