Breakaway by Andrea Montalbano

Montalbano, Andrea, Breakaway, Philomel Books, 2010. Pgs. 208. Language: G, Violence: G, Sexual Content: G
For :I;ily James, soccer is her life. Her temper, however, tends to get her in a lot of trouble. When she kicks her neighbor’s business sign down in anger, he demands that Lily’s family pays for a new sign, despite the fact that there’s nothing wrong with the old one. To make matters worse, Lily costs her team an important game, because of her inability to be a team player. As a consequence, she doesn’t get selected for the state soccer team and is suspended from the team right before the championships. With her free time being spent working in her father’s restaurant to pay for the neighbor’s new sign and being forced to spend her time at her team’s games in street clothes on the bench, Lily feels like her life couldn’t get any worse. Will Lily find a way to turn her life around in time for the big game?

An interesting sports book for young readers. The characters are a little one-sided and the plot is slower moving than some book. Readers who like soccer, however, would enjoy reading this human interest story. EL (4-6). OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
