Gresham, Xanthe Wild
Swans, illustrated by Charlotte Gastaut.
PICTURE BOOK. Barefoot Books,
2018. 978-1782853626
Eliza’s eleven older brothers take good care of her. Sometimes they tease their Stepmother, and
one day is becomes exasperated and turns them into swans so that they can leave
the palace and see life beyond their riches.
With her brothers gone, Eliza is sent to live in a village, where one
day she receives news that the plague has been cured, but her stepmother is
dead. Now there is no one to break the
spell on her brothers except Eliza. The
answer comes to her in a dream.
Gresham makes intriguing little tweaks to the original Hans
Christen Anderson story and Gastaut supplements with beautiful
illustrations. It is nice to
circumstance instead of the stepmother as the classic villain.
