Elsa has a lived a beautiful life with her mother in the scribed world of Veldana.  Then her mother is kidnapped and when she follows the kidnappers to Earth, she finds the building in flames, Veldana’s worldbook in danger, and a murdered scriptologist.  Using her own special scriptology powers, she flees to the safety of a family friend, who introduces her to a refuge for “mad children” the Earth name for children with special talents/powers of any sort.  While the adults seem unable to solve the mystery and find Elsa’s mother, Elsa and her new allies are more than up to the  challenge.

Clare has crafted an interesting new fantasy world, deftly weaving together plot points that could have easily become messy and confusing.  Elsa’s powers are formidable and her new-found friends are a motely lot.  I can’t wait for book #2!
