Long, Ethan Snickerdoodle Takes the Cake. PICTURE BOOK.
Holiday House, 2017. $16.95.
Snickerdoodle wakes up early and discovers his mom
has baked and decorated her famous lemon poppyseed cake with buttercream
frosting. There's a note reminding everyone to not touch the cake, but
Snickerdoodle goes in for a nibble and disaster strikes and he ruins the cake.
When his mom asks him to help fix it, Snickerdoodle rallies his siblings and
together they bake and frost another cake for Grandma's birthday. It does not
look as good, but it still tastes delicious.
This is a picture book that can't
decide if its a picture book or a graphic novel/comic book. As such, its
ridiculously hard to read-aloud and I did not like it. My son loves cake so we
read it multiple times and I still never came around to liking it. The
illustrations are cartoon-y and the message is good if super simple, but I just
did not like it. But there are definitely kids who will, so its not the worst
choice for libraries.
