Chan, Ruth Georgie's Best Bad Day. PICTURE BOOK. Roaring Brook Press, 2017. $17.99.
When Georgie wakes up on the wrong side of the bed -- literally -- he knows it's going to be a bad day. It turns out his friends have had similarly awful luck, so everyone gathers to try to turn the bad day around. But nothing they try seems to work out. Is there any cure at all for a day that started poorly, or are they doomed to have a bad time until bedtime?
This cute picture book has an important life lesson about learning to be in charge of one's own mood, and the uplifting ending finishes the story on a sweet note. The adorable illustrations complement the text nicely and add quite a bit of humor to the story. This one would work especially well in a literary lesson on character conflict or in a character lesson on persistence, as the characters keep trying -- and failing -- to have a good day. Because the thing that turns the day around involves characters laughing due to Georgie's foibles, it's important to point out that Georgie was the first to laugh and break the tension; the others did not join in until Georgie started. After all, being laughed at is not a good way to have a good day -- but laughing with friends is!
