Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams - ADVISABLE

Williams, Carol Lynch. Waiting 335 pgs. Simon and Schuster BFYR, 2012, $9.99

Language: PG-13 (10 swears no Fs); Mature Content: PG13 (teen suicide, and some sexual references) Violence: PG (some parent/child physical fighting).

London’s brother Zach has died and left her with more questions than answers. Her mother blames her for his death and refuses to speak to her. She is unable to process the grief or even speak about it until a new family moves into the area and befriends her. With the help of siblings Lili and Jesse and her boyfriend Taylor she begins to see the tragedy of her brother’s death for what it really is; a tragedy that’s no one’s fault.

This was a quick read for me. It’s one of those books that has few words on some pages and is written in the style of a stream-of-consciousness so the grammar and punctuation rules are out. It had me in tears at the end. I would love to see this in a High School library and I think most middle school kids could handle it too. It has such a powerful message about such a taboo topic that I think kids will really relate to.
