James lives outside the fort in Indian Territory
in 1812. He forms a friendship with
Anikwa, a member of the Miami tribe. The
two friends struggle with what friendship means when the British try to
persuade the Miami Indian’s to help them war against the Americans in the fort. James and Anikwa find themselves torn between
what is right and what the people of their community want to have happen.
This story is told in prose, so it reads
quickly. The writing effectively conveys
the confusion these two boys have about the War of 1812 and it provides an
interesting perspective to the Indians helping the British. I am not sure if boys would be attracted to
this cover or the story, but it is a worthwhile read. The PG rating is because they shoot at each
other and a boy kills a frog for fun.
