Ice Dogs by Terry Johnson - ESSENTIAL

Johnson, Terry Lynn Ice Dogs, 279 p. Houghton Mifflin, 2014.  $17.  Content: G.

Victoria is so angry.  Still hurting from her father’s death in a sledding accident, Victoria is determined to carry on his legacy.  When her mother refuses to take her to a neighbor’s place to look at a lead dog he has for sale, she takes her dogs and her sled and sets off cross-country.  She should easily be back before her mother gets home.  Instead, disaster strikes.  Not only is Victoria stuck in a storm, but once it lifts she is lost and she has gained an injured snowmobiler as companion.  The group sets out to find their way, but the odds, the terrain and the weather are all out to get them.

A great adventure story for upper elementary.  It has enough cliff-hanger moments that it would make for a good read aloud for even 2nd or 3rd grade.
