Congressman John Lewis was an integral participant in the civil rights movement, working directly with Dr. Martin Luther King and other organizers. This graphic novel is the first in an autobiographical series about him and covers his childhood and college years including his participation in the lunch counter sit ins.
It seemed strange to have a prominent congressman’s life story told in graphic novel form, but it really works well. Readers can see the sit ins, and have the story told visually as well. This biography will reach a different audience than usual. Too many “n” words for a elementary school library, ok for a middle school if you know your patrons and maybe too young for the high school. This is a Coretta Scott King honor book.
