I Wonder Why: Countries Fly Flags... - ADVISABLE

Steele, Phillip  I Wonder Why:  Countries Fly Flags and Other Questions about People and Places  Kingfisher, 2012. $6.99 PICTURE BOOK Content: G.

This book has basic explanations of interesting facts about the countries of the world.  In a simple explanation with many illustrations, this book explains why countries have flags, which country is the most populated, how currency works and interesting tidbits about many cities or countries.  Cultural traditions are explored regarding marriage, clothing, housing, food and holidays. The format of the book is to ask a question and then provide a 3-4 sentence paragraph answering the question.  Sometimes there are additional little facts posted off to the side of the question that provide further explanation.  These books are fun for beginners, but it’s not detailed enough to study any one subject closely.  The information is obviously picked based on what the author thought would be most interesting to kids, but it doesn’t cover every country or culture, very few countries are represented.  Overall, I think most kids would find it interesting and it’s good for those who like to ask questions and know fun facts.

EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.

FYI:  Be careful which cover you purchase.  This cover is very nice, but there is another cover available which is really tacky looking.  --Cindy
