Long, Ruth Frances The Treachery of Beautiful Things. 384 pgs. Dial Books, 2012. $17.99. Language: PG, Sexual Content: PG-13 (mostly kissing), Violence PG-13 (deaths of several secondary characters shown in some detail).
Seven years after Jenny saw the trees at the edge of the forest snatch her charismatic older brother, she ventures back to the woods to look for him. But instead of simply going inside the forest, she enters an entirely new realm made up of faeries, fauns, walking trees, and all manner of other magical creatures. As she journeys to rescue her brother from the clutches of an evil queen, she teams up with Jack, a boy who, like the forest, he isn't exactly as he seems.
Those who wish to be swept away in the world of the faeries and experience a star-crossed lovers romance may find this one enjoyable. Readers without a good grounding in faerie stories may end up confused, lost in all the characters and without enough contextual information to find their way.
