Watkins, Angela Farris, PhD My Uncle Martin’s Words for
America, illustrated by Eric Velasquez.
Abrams, 2012. $20. PICTURE BOOK.
Ms. Watkins, one
of King’s nieces, gives her perspective on important words that her
Uncle Martin used to change the lives of African Americans. I think my current favorite about MLK
is Doreen Rappaport’s Martin’s Big Words.
This one seems to emphasize the relationship between the author and
subject too much. And it is very
hero-worshipping in tone – my Uncle Martin changed the world
single-handedly.
