Gretchen and her brother, Ansel find themselves in the town of Live Oaks when their car breaks down. They were leaving their childhood town that held sadness and death and were aiming for the beach, but what they find in Live Oaks keeps them. Ansel falls for the local chocolatier, Sophia, and they move into her home in the middle of the woods where she makes delicious chocolates. Gretchen is a bit suspicious of Sophia and her secrets, but is drawn by her friendship. When Gretchen falls for Samuel, a boy the locals call crazy, after he saves her life from a werewolf, Gretchen begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together, and Sophia is more like the witch in Hansel and Gretel than she lets on.

This book is creative and although parts of it are easy to figure out, there are enough twists to keep the reader completely engaged.
