Bick, Ilsa J. Drowning Instinct 343 pgs. Carolrhoda Lab $17.95, 2012. Rated R for mature content and language (F word x 3, and 30+ other swears) Jenna’s life is a mess. Her mom is struggling to keep a bookstore that she inherited in the black and her dad is a surgeon looking for love with nurses and other hospital staff. She’s been abused and has turned to cutting herself to deal with the past and present. When she’s released from a mental facility her parents decide to put her into a new school and that’s when she meets Mr. Anderson the good-looking chemistry teacher and track coach and her real trouble begins.
The format of the book is written as Jenna is talking into a recording device given to her by a detective tying to find out what has happened. She works from the past reconstructing the beginning of her relationship with Mr. Anderson to the present. It was a page-turner for sure, but I didn’t like where the story went. PUBLIC ONLY. Shauna, reading teacher.
