Ten blocks is a big neighborhood, full of kids who go to private or public school, who are well off or get free lunch, who are leaders, victims, grieving, or anxious. So many stories - everyone has one. Jasmine has sickle-cell anemia and her parents are getting a divorce; The Low-Cuts shakes down kids at school for pocket change; Pia is amazing on her skateboard, but had a lot going on that's not so great; Fatima makes a list, so she can know if things change; Bryson got beat up; Simeon and Kenzi are best friends; Satchmo doesn't want to get bit by a dog, again; Cynthia is a comedienne, her grandfather is funny too; Gregory's friends are super helpful - really; and Canton needs some support.
Jason Reynolds' collection of short stories are delightful, inspiring and poignant. Best friends, bullies, teachers, parents, even the school custodian are part of the lives of these kids. Keep looking for a "school bus falling from the sky" and so many other great charming pieces of everyday, middle school life. It begs to be read and re-read.
