Bone Soup: A Spooky, Tasty Tale by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, illustrated by Tom Knight. PICTURE BOOK. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2018. $18. 9781481486088
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Much like the folktale Stone Soup (as explained in the note from the author) this is the story of starting with nothing but hunger and creating a soup from the contribution of others. In this case, the others are zombies and ghosts and such and their contributions include eyeballs and dried dragon wings.
I think the point of this story is lost unless the reader already knows the story of Stone Soup. With this background information, this would be a fun Halloween book. It could be used as a Halloween party activity in which everyone contributes something to a class scary story, for example.
