Anna and Johanna by Géraldine Elschner and Florence Kœnig - ADVISABLE

Elschner, Géraldine and Florence Kœnig Anna and Johanna : A Children's Book Inspired by Jan Vermeer.  PICTURE BOOK. Prestel, 2018 (English edition) $15.

EL - (K-3) ADVISABLE

Anna and Johanna share a birthday, one girl is the daughter of the master of the house, the other is the daughter of a housemaid, but the girls are best friends and prepare a gift for each other for their special day. But this year is different - a letter reveals a family secret that could change their lives forever.

Based on two famous paintings by Vermeer, The Lacemaker and The Milkmaid, the author supposes a connection and writes a story to make it work. I'm always excited to see books featuring lacemakers, as I am one myself, and was mildly disappointed to see the lacemakers tools misnamed - but that could have happened in translating from the French. This would make a fun lesson for a creative writing assignment - pair 2 paintings by the same artist and write their story.
