Long, Loren Otis and the Puppy. Philomel (Penguin), 2013. $18. PICTURE
BOOK. Content: G.
After the work is done, Otis and his
friends love playing hide and seek all over the farm. When the farmer brings a new puppy home, the two become fast
friends. Then one day during hide
and seek, the puppy wanders off and gets lost in the woods. Getting lost can be very scary.
Long’s book addresses the issue very
simply and sweetly. And the
message of getting distracted and wandering off is an excellent example for
little ones, who tend to get easily distracted. A great read for a preschool or daycare center or anyone who
has small ones who wonder why they always have to hold someone’s hand.
