Hubknuckles by Emily Herman
Herman, Emily. Hubknuckles, illustrated by Deborah Kogan Ray. Crown Publishers (Random House), 1985. $14.99. PICTURE BOOK. Every year Hubknuckles, a ghost, comes to their window on Halloween. Lee tells her siblings that Hubknuckles is just really one of their parents and that she is going to go outside and catch them. At dinner, Lee wasn’t hungry for her favorite spaghetti. She was feeling nervous as their friends arrived in costumes for the party. Then she saw Hubknuckles at the window and she couldn’t see her Pa anywhere. So she ventures outside and discovers Hubknuckles is real. Together they dance in the woods. She goes back inside and finds both of her parents. The powdered graphite and pencil illustrations are perfect match for this ghost story. A gentle ghost story that is age-appropriate and fun. EL – ADVISABLE. Samantha, Public Librarian.
