Parties & Potions by Sarah Mlynowski

Mlynowski, Sarah. Parties & Potions, 340 pgs. Delacorte Press, 2009. $16.99. Sexual Content: PG; Language: G; Violence: G. Rachel is set for her sophomore year of high school. She has a boyfriend, cute clothes, a best friend, and she happens to be a witch. Her little sister Miri wants to meet more witches and warlocks and joins a social networking site. Rachel and Miri meet Wendaline who tells them about a coming out party for witches called a Samsorta. The sisters attend a Samsorta school in Arizona to prepare for their debut on Halloween night. Rachel is determined to keep her father and high school friends separated from her magic ones, but finds lying to those she loves increasingly difficult. The story is told from a first person perspective of a self-centered teen that is believable and almost likeable. This is the fourth installment in the Magic in Manhattan series and will most likely to appeal to fans of chicklit and light fantasy. MS/HS – ADVISABLE. Samantha, Public Librarian.
