Princess Mia by Meg Cabot - ADVISABLE

Cabot, Meg Princess Mia, 288pgs. HarperCollins Books-

Language: G, Sexual Content: G, Violence: G.

MS, HS- ADVISABLE

Mia has just hit a dead end. Her boyfriend broke up with her, Lilly is ignoring her, and she is forced to go to a therapist. Everything around her means nothing. She is completely depressed. One day, she agrees to give a speech in front of New York's finest women, but only because she wants her grandma off her back. Completely out of ideas, she decides to read the journal of one of her ancestors, Princess Amelie. Without knowing, Mia could change the entire politics of Genovia.

This book was ok. It didn't really appeal to me as much as some books. But it was great how Mia tries to prove how even girls can change the way people govern an entire country. Second to last on the Princess Diaries.

I thought this book was very good because it had a good moral that sometimes it's not what you can't do it's what you can do that counts.

Caitlin and Andie are identical twins. Andie is athletic, and Caitlin isn't. Although, she is going to try out for the Jazz ensemble, but the P.E. teacher said that everyone has to go though an assessment. Caitlin doesn't think she will pass, so she asks her sister to do it for her. They promise that it would be a one time thing, then they both like being each other more than themselves.

I really didn't care for this book, because I prefer less predictable books. Even though, I think that it teaches kids that they can do anything that they set their minds to.

Callie is so mad, but she ends up learning a lot from the election. So she really doesn't care who wins.

This book, made me think of SBO elections. Most likely because there was competition. I liked this book, just not enough to go out and buy it. I also think that the author should have added more detail.

The thing I did pick up implied lots of sexual things. and in this tiny book it had 11 swear words 10 of which were the F- word. Never, ever, ever read this book.

Fans of Jacky Faber are rejoicing at her return. Jacky Faber is finally headed to England to see what awaits her . . . most likely the hangman’s noose. Unexpectedly, the ship she is on is captured by the French and Jacky is imprisoned and beheaded. . . . well, at least that is what the British Intelligence Service want the world to believe. Now that the infamous Jacky Faber is dead, no one will be looking for her. This allows Jacky to be sent as a spy into France. Her life as a spy begins as a ballet dancer and ends as a messenger in Napoleon’s army where she comes face to face with the famous Emperor. Readers of this series will welcome Jacky’s return to posing as a boy and the troubles/opportunities that causes her. In this novel, Meyer include an increased amount of sexual references and bawdy inferences. However, Jacky’s innocence remains intact. The use of coarse language is minimal and the violence stems from the story being placed in war time.

This book starts out with a silly "Guide to the Afterlife" which starts the chuckles off right away. The main story is about a skeleton named Billy Bones, his parents, one Sir Barkley Braggety Biglum VI, Miss Primly, Sir Barkley Braggety Biglum VI niece, Millicent, a kind old lady, and a ghost and the Grim Reaper. A cute little story a lot like Tim Burton's claymations.

I think any one could read this book and be thoroughly entertained. The characters are ones you could love or hate (depending on the character) and the story has a good moral.

Up to this point Jo has been as Aunt Lily says "as dangerous as a glass of milk," but that all changes at Aunt Lily's annual Christmas costume party when several strange things happen: a boy in a hedgehog costume shoots an elderly Russian Colonel, a talking cockroach is found tied in the basement moaning about how this will play in the tabloid press and a box falls from the sky addressed to Jo from the order of Order of Odd-Fish.

This book is like Monty Python and Roald Dahl mixed together. It's extremely funny and had me laughing out loud.

It's a fun story that I couldn't put down but has quite a lot of swearing that could possibly make someone uncomfortable. Shows the challenges that children face when their parents get divorced and remarry. It was interesting for me to see the divorce from Cassie's little three year old eyes and then again as she grows up to a teenager. The Lucky Place really shows everyone exactly how hard it can be to have an Old Dad and a New Dad and having to think you have to choose between them. Great book, and eye opener for sure. The tension, danger and thrills continue in the fourth installment of this fantastic series. I think I like the fact that the mythology is fairly true to the lore, instead of so twisted that not even recognizable like some mythology remakes have been lately. Go, Rick!!

100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson - OPTIONAL

Wilson, N.D. 100 Cupboards, 289 pages

EL, MS - OPTIONAL

Henry's parents have disappeared, so he has been sent to live with his Aunt, Uncle and cousins in a tiny Kansas town. Henry unearths a long-hidden secret that puts him and his family in danger. An intriguing series of drawers and cupboards are windows into other places, worlds, times and dimensions. Henry's cousin Henrietta thinks the whole thing is a big joke and suddenly the whole family must work together to save them all from a long-lived menace.

I like Henry and his extended family and the story up to a point. But - once the time and place travel starts, situations develop rapidly without enough background to allow any reader to follow the action. This problem isn't unique to this novel; it's a common downfall of many time travel novels. I think a younger reader would be confused about the action. It sounds like there will be a sequel where the other worlds may be better explored.

The Debs by Susan McBride - NO

McBride, Susan The Debs, 246 p. Random House, 2008.

Language - R (85+ swears); Sexual Content - PG-13.

NOT RECOMMENDED

Ten lucky girls are chosen each year to join the Rosebuds, an exclusive group of Texas debutantes, who may become members of the elite Glass Slipper Club. But neither nomination nor election is assured, even if you are the daughter of a GSC member. Four of this year's crop of potentials have it out for each other.

Backstabbing and sabotage are a way of life and an art form for this diverse bunch of spoiled prima donnas. Too much swearing for me, but if your school loves the IT girls or Private series, they will probably like this too.

Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez - ADVISABLE

Perez, Marlene Dead is the New Black, 190 p. Harcourt, 2008. Language - G (8 swears).

MS, HS - ADVISABLE

Daisy is the only one is her family without psychic powers. But her curiosity and detective feelers are aroused when Samantha, the head cheerleader and FORMER best friend, comes back to town sporting a new "dead" look. Something weird is happening to the other girls on the cheerleading squad, something that may include vampires. Against her better judgment, Daisy may have to join the cheerleading squad to get to the bottom of all of this.

Out in paperback right now. Perez continues the recent trend towards books about the undead and related creepy others with a funny and lovable (but still creppy) entry. Perfect for lovers of the genre, including reluctant readers.

The Knaveheart's Curse by Adele Griffin - OPTIONAL

Griffin, Adele The Knaveheart's Curse, 131 p. Putnam (Penguin), 2008.

EL - OPTIONAL

Maddy, a vegan vampire in New York, is on track to becoming a full-fledged human. She decides, however, that she is lonely, so she bribes another girl, Dakota, to be her friend. Maddy gets more than she bargains for, when it seems as though her older sister, Lexie, is changing and rumors are flying that the Knaveheart elder is in search of an heir.

This second installment of the Vampire Island Story is much better than the first. Younger children who like spooky stories may enjoy this too.

The Magician by Michael Scott - ESSENTIAL

Scott, Michael The Magician, 461 p. Delacorte (Random House), 2008.

MS - ESSENTIAL

Pernelle is being held prisoner deep inside Alcatraz Island, while Nicholas, Sophie and Josh have escaped through a portal to Paris. Not just John Dee, sorcerer, is after them, and now he has the aid of Machiavelli, another man of evil power. But Flamel and the twins have allies of their own - a former apprentice of Flamel's and his new wife, a powerful warrior. While Pernelle works to outwit her jailer, the Sphinx, and another enemy from the skies, those in Paris are running for their lives. Josh, however, is unsure whom he should trust. No one is telling him the whole truth - only what they want him to know.

Scott has hit it again with a well-plotted, sparkling novel of magic, friendship and danger. And now I have to WAIT for #3!!!

My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison - ADVISABLE

Rallison, Janette My Fair Godmother, 384 p. Walker (Bloomsbury), January 2009.

MS - ADVISABLE.

Savannah has been dumped by her boyfriend, who has fallen in love with her older sister?? What's up with that?! Savannah has a fairy godmother - well, only a "fair" godmother, because Chrissy didn't do so well in godmother school. Savannah's wish for a fairytale romance sends her back to the Middle Ages, through several different familiar tales. Not her, however, but her sister, the boyfriend and a nice guy from school.

Merriment, magic and romance ensue. Rallison's quirky humor comes roaring out in this hilarious look at wishes and love. The things that come out of Savannah's mouth made me laugh out loud; so will your students.

Sweet and Viscious by Claudia Gabel

Gabel, Claudia Sweet and Vicious, 242 p. Scholastic, 2008.

MS - ADVISABLE.

Third in the series. Class treasurer, hot boyfriend and rising on the social scale - Marnie seems to have it all in high school. But everywhere she turns, there is Nola - ex-best friend and now bona fide enemy. Riding high on her new-found popularity, Marnie makes some bad choices, choices which could alienate her new clique. Nola has to deal with her feelings for Matt, who already has a girlfriend. Nola has her own bouts with witchiness that threaten her own friendships. While the wallflower is find her inner power, the dominator is being put in her place.

What I like about these books is that there is no good versus evil; one girl is not always right and the other is not always wrong. The novels do seem to be getting more cut-throat; I kind of hope there will be a turn for the better soon. I can only take so much cat-fighting.

Model Spy AND Down to the Wire by Shannon Greenland - ESSENTIAL

Greenland, Shannon Model Spy (206 p.) and Down to the Wire (213 p.) Speak (Penguin).

MS - ESSENTIAL

Kelly was just your normal 16-year-old genius attending college, until a cute boy talks her into cracking open government files. Now, she can either go to jail or she can join a group of teens who spy for the USA. There's only a few problems - Kelly (newly renamed Girl Genius, or GiGi) is a klutz, so keeping a cover and protecting herself may be difficult AND that cute boy is a spy also, so GiGi feels betrayed. None of that matters when lives are on the line.

Who knew the spy game could be so much fun! Danger abounds, but so do very human moments. I think there are four books in the series now. I can't wait for the rest!

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George - ESSENTIAL

George, Jessica Day Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow, 328 p. Bloomsbury, 2008.

MS, HS - ESSENTIAL

Known as "the lass", because her mother refuses to name her, Pika (the word for girl) is taken by a bear to a frozen palace, far from her family. Pika's ability to communicate with animals is a boon and a burden as she asks to many questions and puts everything she loves at risk. Now she must undertake a perilous journey to find a place east of the sun and west of the moon, outwit the troll Queen and save her beloved.

George has taken this timeless tale and reimagined it with beautiful, descriptive language and a compelling main character. I think East is in for a challenge as to the best retelling of this story.
