Boy is a hunchback who cares for the goats at a manor in France. Secundus is an elderly pilgrim collecting relics and headed for Rome. He takes Boy along because he can climb and carry the relics he has already collected. Boy is weary of being a monster (because of his hunch); he is bullied by the other children and feared by all who see him. Boy hopes that traveling all the way to Rome with Secundus will grant him his wish to be a regular boy. But Secundus is a dangerous mentor, expecting Boy to help him steal the precious relics.

The Middle Ages - angel or monster, demon or pilgrim, this well researched story is exciting - full of danger and adventure. Lots of great information about the middle ages, this is not really historical fiction - there's a bit of magic and spiritualism. Fans of supernatural will love this book.   I loved the story and would recommend it, but books about the middle ages are a difficult sell in my library.
