The Secret Cave: Discovering Lascaux by Emily Arnold McCully

McCully, Emily Arnold The Secret Cave: Discovering Lascaux.  Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 2010.  $16.99.  PICTURE BOOK.  Content: G.  In 1940, four boys decide to explore a deep hole near their village in France.  Hoping to find treasure buried by count, the boys instead found a vast cave, filled with precious drawings left behind by our earliest ancestors.  With the help of a former teacher, who had taught the boys about their ancient history, the boys let the world about their discovery and eventually two of them became the caretakers of the wonders inside – after the events of WWII.  The fictionalized reaccounting of the discovery of the caves serves many important roles in the education of future conservationists.  It would be a valuable introduction on many levels on the importance of preserving our past and how difficult that is to do.  Share this with the right teacher in your school.  EL, MS, HS – ADVISABLE.
