APPEALS TO SEVERAL

When Minerva moved to Southern California with her husband, she fell in love with the desert landscape - especially the area filled with the other-worldly Joshua trees. For almost two decades she worked to educate people about the beauty of the desert and to convince President Roosevelt that her beloved lands should be protected as a National Park.

Alexander's words really make Minerva's dedication shine through. My great grandmother lived for several years out near Joshua Tree, so I was able to see them for myself. The author's note in the back matter contains some important information and tips about preserving all of our natural habitats. Minerva is white.
