Lucy lives with her grandmother and is a math
savant since she was struck by lightning at the age of eight. Lucy is so smart at math that she has been home schooled and passed high school courses online. Lucy’s grandmother decides that what Lucy is
missing is friends and so she makes a deal with Lucy that if she can go to
school for one year and make one friend, read one new book and join one new
club that after seventh grade Lucy can do college classes. Lucy tries to hide her unique math skills and
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and fit in, but middle school is brutal until
Lucy finds her friends and works for a dog shelter.
I loved this book. Lucy is hilarious and strong and I loved her
story. This is a unique premise for a coming
of age story, yet it made me empathize with those middle school years, when
being different is totally uncool.
