Long May She Wave by Kristen Fulton - ADVISABLE

Fulton, Kristen Long May She Wave : The True Story of Caroline Pickersgill and her Star Spangled Creation, illustrated by Holly Berry. PICTURE BOOK. Simon and Schuster (Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2017. $17.99. Content: G.

When Caroline Pickersgill was 13-years-old, her mother was contracted to sew a very large American Flag.  It was meant to be seen by the British from miles away.  The flag was very large and much of it had to be sewn while the flag was on the floor - Caroline was perfect for this job. She was young and nimble - what an honor for her first flag!  Incorporating memorable lines from The Star Spangled Banner, this picture book follows Caroline as she witnesses the battle of Fort McHenry and watches to see if her flag is still there.

This beautiful tribute to our flag and the dedicated women who made it is a great quick read for a history lesson - although most of our history is about the men who fought the battles, it’s great to know about the women whose handiwork is on display in our nation’s capitol.
