Alidade is continuing her adventure as a Mapmaker as she tries to save the world from the sinister Night Coats. With her companions, Lewis and Blue, she is excited to explore the world outside her own and perhaps even find other Memris, the guardians who should have stopped the Night Coats. When the explorers are taken to a hidden mountain village, they discover more about Memris and another culture, but could be a danger to others since the Night Coats are following fast. There is some cool world-building and just enough clues to make the reader want to know more about the Night Coats and their agenda and why Mapmakers and Memris are a threat to them. Lewis notes that they have to not be afraid of things they don't understand, which seems a good life lesson.

While this book helps us discover more of Alidade's world, it doesn't address much in the way of the larger conflict between the native peoples and the Night Coats. The ending points that way and will leave you wanting some resolution. There are several different cultures in this fantasy realm.
