The United States and the Soviet Union are on opposite sides politically and as tensions increase, the two nations begin a nuclear arms race. Bombs, spies, submarines with nuclear warheads, and missiles aimed at each other, the world stands on the edge of a knife that could lead to World War III or the end of the world as we know it.

Sheinkin is a master at making history come alive. I was sucked in from the first page and couldn't stop until I finished. It was fascinating to see how world leaders and individuals reacted to the threat of nuclear war and how close we came. This book humanizes a defining moment in history and proves that facts told the right way are more fascinating than any fiction. A must-read for anyone interested in history and not on high blood pressure medication.
