A prequel to A Christmas Carol, this is the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and Belle Endicott. Learn about the doomed love of Scrooge that came before the ghosts and Tiny Tim.
Unfortunately, this book is not one that invokes any joy for the season or fizz of romantic feelings. Scrooge is presented as a young entrepreneur who has the idea of manufacturing buttons. This business endeavor brings him into contact with Belle and her father, who make buttons. With that set-up it should be apparent that the book as a whole is boring. Add to that the relationship of Belle and Scrooge is confounding as he accepts without comment her habit of going into trances to commune with her dead mother and she loves him with an adoration that defies any displays of his personality.
