Ailey, 12yo, loves to dance and he wants to land the role of the Scarecrow in the upcoming school play, The Wiz. He knows he is good and that he is the best one for the part. On audition day, when his turn comes, he is overtaken by a major attack of stage fright. Unable to do a single dance move he dejectedly goes home. He visits his grandpa, and he tell Ailey that he used to be a tap dancer, dancing on the street corner in Harlem when he was twelve. He was given a pair of tap shoes by a famous dancer and regrets never using them. Curiously, Ailey looks for the shoes, finds them, and puts them on. The shoes shrink to fit and instantly Ailey is transported back to Harlem in the 1930's where he meets his 12yo grandpa!
What a neat adventure! This was a cool way to time-travel and to learn family history. I loved the book and loved how Ailey's and grandpa's stories are so similar. Will Ailey find a way to get back home to his own family? The story of Ailey and his grandpa is filled with history, real life adventure and is sure to charm and inspire children of all ages.
