11yo Bevvy has no friends, but she does have bullies. When she makes tentative overtures to a new girl, she isn’t immediately rebuffed, but it isn't easy going, either. Then Cat, the new girl, is spooked by a strange car cruising by and the two girls end up through a doorway Cat opened into another world. Cat’s world is a brief joy and total mystery for Bevvy - it has magical beings like dragons and unicorns, but the creatures seem to be out to kill humans. The world has been taken over by a man who wants all of the magic for himself - regardless of the cost. While Cat has some skill that may be useful in defeating him, Bevvy also has a special perspective that can help - if they can convince the rebels to listen and trust.
Bevvy’s story is a lot of book for a small payoff. I found Cat’s world-building lacking in things that really drew me in and feeling invested. Definitely more for a busy fantasy library collection.
