Chew, Ruth What the Witch Left, 131 pgs. Random House, 1973 (reprint: 2013). $15.99. Content: G
When Louise and Katy discover a drawer full of items left by Katy's mysterious Aunt Martha, they can't help but nose through it. But when they figure out that each mundane-seeming item has a unique magical power, they know their explorations have just begun.
What the Witch Left is a fun, simple, feel-good adventure that is nice while it lasts but is ultimately fairly forgettable. As befits its original publishing date of 1973, it has a cozy, old-fashioned feel to it that may appeal to some readers and could help it hold up to multiple comfort-readings. Under the dust jacket is the original cover, which makes for a nice contrast, although even the current cover could be made more eye-catching than it is.
