A modern-day fairytale, where the prince (in this case, two princes) is queer. Imagine if Canada had its own version of the royal family. Now imagine that royal family rediscovering a long-lost twin that they thought died at birth. Who will get to be crowned (literally) most likely to succeed: Edward who has spent 18 painful closeted years obeying every rule and bylaw, hiding who he is really is or what he really wants, or Billy who grew up in the middle of nowhere, but is out and proud, and a natural born leader?

At first, I was so distracted by the very thought of a Canadian royal family. Like, that doesn’t exist! That doesn’t make sense! And everything was maple leaf this and maple syrup that; We get it, it’s all very Canadian. But then I got swept up into the drama between the brothers and the behind the scenes look at royal family life. I also appreciated the author’s intentional centering of queer characters and queer joy instead of making them a dramatic side plot. I would imagine this being very popular with high school students obsessed with reality tv, social media, the British royal family drama with the heir and the spare. p.s. Swearing in French is still swearing, Prince Edward.
