Humans Mina and Swan (13 yo) miss their roller derby teammates the Blood City Rollers, who also happen to be vampires. After spending the summer searching for them, they finally track them down at a creepy abandoned asylum. But if the Blood City Rollers want to keep their new home, they must compete in a sudden death scrimmage against another roller derby team made up of misfit monsters who are also searching for a place to belong. Along the way, Mina learns that being part of a team means supporting one another rather than always trying to compete.

Because I had not read the first book in the series, I spent the beginning of the story feeling a little lost and confused. I kept wondering why two human girls were playing on a vampire roller derby team. However, as the story progressed, I was able to piece together the background information and better understand the characters and their relationships. The book delivers a positive message about friendship, teamwork, and learning to put the success of the group ahead of individual competition. The characters are a mix of ethnicities.

17yo Bly loves her sister Elise and appreciates how Elise does the things Bly doesn’t want to do, like helping their parents with their work. When Elise is trapped by a witch’s spell, Bly will do whatever it takes to get her sister back. The sister’s mutual and lifelong friend Emerson is willing to help. They enter the Revenant Games to win Elise back and become entangled in the witches’ and vampires’ play for power. Emerson has a witch acquaintance who he believes will help but she may have an agenda of her own. When Bly is surrounded by a group of dangerous vampires, a mysterious vampire saves her and she later learns that his name is Kerrigan, a vampire prince. Will Bly and Emerson get lost in the midst of the violent Revenant Games?

I noticed a few typos and also an incorrect use of the word waste, should have been waist and I wondered about the editing process. I liked the journey of Bly discovering what she truly wants in life as she matures. Kerrigan is an interesting character and I enjoyed learning about his background and reasons for his actions.

Emerson has dark brown skin. Bly has pale skin.

17yo Tosh has moved from Portland, Oregon to Paris with her father.  She is excited about school, learning a new language and embracing all the sights and sounds of Paris. It’s a dream come true! Shortly after arriving, she meets another neighbor and student, Nick, who becomes her tour guide and her romantic partner.  Together they explore the street-life, beautiful architecture and creepy underground catacombs where vampires are known to roam.  Are vampires real? Can a vampire be cured and become human once again? Will love and friendship survive the city of Paris’ darkest and deepest secrets?

The Uninvited was interesting and full of twists and turns.  The friendships that formed were strong and relatable.  Tosh’s relationship with her father was troubling.  He was unkind and unsupportive of her experiences and her emotions- especially when she tried to explain a traumatic event in her past.  There is an attempted suicide and some mention of the pro’s of cigarette smoking- which was really odd and unusual.  Aside from those disturbing events, I really enjoyed the book and can see YA readers enjoying it as well.

18yo Arthie has been on her own since she was ten. She eventually found another orphan named Jin and took him under her wing. Together they built Spindrift, a tea house by day for proper society and a blood house by night for vampires who want to be civilized and not harm others. When Spindrift is threatened, Arthie tries using her blackmailing skills to keep her place safe. When that doesn’t work, Arthie and Jin recruit other outcasts to pull off a scheme that will knock the threat to its knees!

Arthie is mysterious and keeps to herself but she has fierce loyalty to those she cares about. Jin is a charming, fun character and adds a lot of life to the story. The mystery and scare of the half vampire, the Wolf of White Roaring, is extremely interesting.

The ethnicity is predominantly white with a mix of races as the main characters.

18yo (sort of) Clara and Molly run an historic movie theater in Manhattan. Boaz is one of their employees, he runs the ticket booth. Clara and Molly are Estries - undead, vampire-like girls who can turn into owls and feed on Jewish men. Boaz has a family curse - he can see and communicate with ghosts. His Aunt has a ring, passed down through the family that helps focus the ghost sightings, and she has a successful cable tv show where she is a medium. Clara has a lot of rules to keep she and Molly safe - they've "lived" together like this for over 100 years. One of the rules is no romance. But when Molly finds a girlfriend, who disappears, they blame Boaz. And even though he denies it, and is infuriating, Clara finds herself falling for him.

Who knew that Jewish theater had an underground in New York City full of demons and monsters and the Prince of Demons himself? This stand alone horror, romance, mystery was spine tingling with some good scares, and a great plot. Written for a Jewish reader, there's not a glossary or pronunciation guide for the yiddish, but context was well developed so I had no trouble because of my lack of background knowledge. I especially loved all the nods to early (1910-1930s) motion pictures. Boaz, like me, was a real film nerd, so I totally connected as he geeked out about certain movies. Highly recommended as a great thriller. The characters are Jewish and monsters.

6th grader Caleb knows his new town is weird - who wants to dress-up in a Halloween costume all year long? His new best friend Tia loves it, but she is willing to believe Caleb when he thinks there is something very fishy about the whole town. Are werewolves and vampires real?  Are they running town hall and other stores? Caleb has an idea for exposing them once and for all and making Samhain safe for normals.

I am not fully invested here. Caleb seems to be afraid of the creatures around him just to be afraid of them - there is no evidence of mysterious disappearances or deaths around Samhain - which sounds like prejudice to me. No real scare factor here, either. The only bright spot is the very last chapter - a set up for book #2, where intolerant Caleb may get his comeuppance!  That I am looking forward to.

Caleb is white on the cover; Tia is depicted as Black.

13yo Mia has been working towards representing Romania in the Olympics since she was three-years old. A horrible fall during a competition puts her out of commission as a figure skater, but then she is kidnapped by undead roller skaters and recruited for a paranormal roller derby team made up of vampires. Mia suddenly discovers that she likes being part of a team, even if she's human and they aren't.

It's obvious that Anderson and Hill play roller derby. The art captures the ups and downs and excitement of the game. Though vampires and roller derby seem an odd pairing, it makes for a fun story. Anyone who plays roller derby is going to love it, and it's a great introduction to the game for newbies. The characters are strong and there is obviously a sequel coming, so it will be interesting to see what happens to Mia in book two. Characters come from different ethnic groups and time periods.

Siblings and high school students Theo and Marco throw an epic end-of-the-year party without permission. As their punishment, their father takes them with him to spend the summer at their grandma's house on the Oregon coast. Their grandmother is superstitious and the town is small. Marco and Theo are not happy to be there. They soon make friends with some of the local kids and things seem to be looking up. Their grandmother tells them to always be home before dark but their new friends seem to have a magnetic pull that Theo and Marco can not resist. Soon Theo begins to see that the town and her new friends are hiding dark secrets.

An enjoyable vampire story. The characters were interesting and believable. The story had good pacing. I liked that the whole town was involved in the story in one way or another. The excessive use of the F word was unnecessary. Beware that vampires are killed by decapitation, and by being run through by stakes. Bodies are discovered that have been bitten and mauled. Theo and Marco have a white father and Hispanic mother. Their friends are described as white, black and brown.

They meet Remy and Calder and are placed in their cell, unsure of whether they will be allies or enemies. If they survive prison, it will be a miracle.

The amount of swearing distracts from the story. I like how kindhearted Grace is. The story actually pulls me in when Hudson is arrested by the Circle after the graduation ceremony and Grace insists on going with her mate to prison; I was invested in the story after that. Flint is black. Grace, Macy, Hudson and Jaxon are white.

17yo Grace has just woken up from four months of sleep as a stone gargoyle. For some reason, her gargoyle alter ego isn’t comfortable with Jaxon and his being a vampire. On the morning that Grace wakes up with blood on her hoodie, she thinks she may have drained Cole, the alpha werewolf, of blood - almost to the point of death. She discovers that Jaxon’s evil brother Hudson has somehow taken up residence in her mind.

This sequel to Crave is cheesy at times but also full of adventure, action, danger and great world building. The Ludares game, the Boneyard, the Bloodletter’s lair, the Unkillable Beast and the banter between Hudson and Grace make this a fun, interesting read! I enjoyed the silly jokes that Jaxon and Grace tell each other. The cheesiness gives humor to the story. The danger picks up in this second book of the Crave series. Grace, Macy and Jaxon are white. The bloodletter has light brown skin.

17yo Grace has recently lost both of her parents and is now becoming a resident of Alaska so she can live with extended family, her uncle and her cousin Macy. She’s in a bit of a culture shock from the small population and extremely cold weather, since she’s just traveled from San Diego. But when she arrives at Katmere Academy, her new home, she’s astounded. It’s an elegant castle where students reside and her uncle is the headmaster. Grace feels out of place and she can tell which students “run” the school. It seems to be run by the Order, with Jaxon Vega as the leader. Jaxon helps Grace more than once and she starts falling for him. Strange and dangerous things keep happening around and to Grace but she believes that she’s getting to know her fellow students and who she can trust until information is revealed about her parents.

The book started out cheesy with the silly chapter titles and the almost instant swooning but still a fun read. The depth occurred through character development and a bit of mystery. I enjoyed Jaxon’s perspective at the ending because it helped understand the situation better. I am curious about and anxious to read the sequel and unravel more of the background of the fun characters The ethnicity is predominantly white. Flynn is Black and the Alaskan natives are bronze skinned.

"One Girl In All The World" is a deeper dive into the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the hit TV series. It's full of the same characters and similar plot lines as it emphasizes the character, Frankie, and her struggle to balance being a slayer-witch but also going to school and dealing with tests, the social ladder, and teachers.

Going into this book with no previous knowledge of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I was rather confused, but the overall world establishment and development of characters were nice. I thought that the author captured several of the high school cliches a little to perfectly and Frankie's high school life was too clique. Frankie is described as white.

26yo Sylina, a Sister of the Arachessen, a group of skilled assassins and magic users, has given everything to her goddess; her devotion, her life, her eyes. Her most recent mission is interrupted, however, when the vampires arrive. Brutal, strong, and fast, they move quickly across the nation, conquering city state after city state as they work their way to the capital. Sylina's job is simple, at least in theory: gain the trust of the Conqueror and kill him. As she infiltrates his army, claiming a place as his seer, she will soon find herself teetering between her Arachessen vows and the man she was sent to kill.

As always, I love Broadbent's books, however I cannot recommend them to a high school (let alone younger) audience. I thought Sylina was an intriguing character as she was conventionally blind, having sacrificed her eyes, and Atrius the Conqueror was wonderfully complex. I also appreciate that their romance is built on mutual respect and trust rather than lust. While they contain beautifully complex, intelligent characters and a unique plot, they also depict quite explicit sex, brutal violence (there were an amazing amount of beheadings), and strong language. Race is not mentioned although Sylina is white on some covers and the vampires are all painfully pale.

Pippa deeply misses her best friend Celine and believes that she can get to the bottom of Celine’s disappearance. Pippa quickly finds herself on a journey into the fey world, where everything has two meanings and Pippa is unsure if she can untangle the magic and fey mischief. Pippa’s pathway into the fey world was through a Vale that Arjun Desai, a half fey, has opened in his own quest to help his dear friend Odette from experiencing the final death. Arjun and Pippa cross paths and they have undeniable chemistry.

Ahdieh writes great characters in amazing settings, and I have enjoyed the entire series. I felt like this storyline departs from the rest of the series and takes place in a new world with minor characters, making it feel a bit detached from the rest of the series. Once I accepted the new direction, I fell into the story with Pippa and Arjun. Their chemistry is a slow build with great adventure along the way. The content makes this optional, and this appeals to those who are already invested in the series, but if your readers have liked the other books, they will enjoy this one as well.

Best friends stick together, even when only one of them wants to go to a party for the lead singer of a band – who isn’t even that good. But after getting bitten by a vampire, 17yo Tansy knows going to that party was the worst decision they have ever made. Skyler doesn’t feel the same way. Skyler is still determined to chase after the vampire lead singer, and Tansy will do anything to get her back.

Important details were repeated several times throughout the book, as if the characters forgot they already knew information or that they had a goal. This also made the storyline take redundant loops where nothing was accomplished. Then contradictory information offered in one scene would all be accepted, and I was left wondering why none of the characters were suspicious about what was being said. On top of that, there are two characters who randomly pop up three times in the whole book, and I still don’t know what they were trying to accomplish in the story. All of this confusion was annoying and made the read choppy. The only parts of the book that make any sense are the scenes that focus on Tansy’s love story subplot.

Tansy, her family, Skyler, Vaughn, and all the vampires are white or “pale.” The mature content rating is for mentions of drugs and alcohol, underage drinking, innuendo, mentions of condoms and sex, partial nudity, and kidnapping and other illegal activity. The violence rating is for corpses, vampire bites, bleeding, gun use, and murder and attempted murder.

Warren is about to ascend and embody a demon, when a petite blond stranger interrupts and Jonathan ends up killing Warren instead of helping him. Turns out the stranger is a slayer from another dimension, there to take out as many Black Flames from as many dimensions as she can so that she can find her home dimension. Jonathan, Andrew, and Anya (who works at a “juice” bar with Andrew) won’t let Demondale vanish forever, so they recruit Angelus, Spike, Drucilla, and vampire Willow to help them find some way to defeat Buffy for good.

For fans of Buffy, they will love this look at the Buffyverse that weaves in many familiar episodes in different ways. I am just not sure how hot Buffy is for the MS/HS crowd. Probably the best I’ve read of the Buffy as it pays homage without twisting the series in weird ways.

Victoria (18yo) and her dad have always loved vampires – even before one showed up on the news to show the world they exist. While her dad has always said that he’d rather be a werewolf than a vampire, Victoria would rather he be alive. Chemo has stopped working, and Victoria is determined to not give up hope while her dad still breathes. If anyone can find a vampire in New Orleans, it’s Victoria – she just needs to get there.

I was at war with myself throughout this entire book about whether I wanted vampires to be real like Victoria believed or to be a skeptic like her friend, Henry. The not knowing kept me on the edge of my seat even as I worried with Victoria about her father. Fuston discusses grief through Victoria’s denial and through several other characters who try to help her throughout the book. Emotions are complicated and intense, but that doesn’t mean that they are bad.

Victoria and her mom are described as having pink skin, her dad and Jessica are described as having an olive complexion, and Henry is part Japanese. The mature content rating is for alcohol use, mention of drugs and nudity, and innuendo. The violence rating is for mentions of vampire feedings and murder as well as for blood.
