Lemons by Melissa Savage - ADVISABLE

Savage, Melissa Lemons, Pgs. 305. Crown Books (Random House), 2017. $16.99. Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: G.

When you have lemons, make lemonade. That’s what Lemonade Liberty Witt’s mother always said. Lem tries, but since her mother died, there only seems to be bitterness. Being forced to move in with her estranged grandfather in a small, Podunk town doesn’t help. Then she meets Tobin Sky, the neighbor boy, who happens to be a Bigfoot investigator. Tobin convinces her to join him in his quest to find Bigfoot. In no time, Lem and Tobin are camping in the woods, exploring evidence, and questioning the locals. Through it all they learn to appreciate the people who matter most.

This is a story about the power of friendship and family disguised as an adventure. Lem is a strong character who stands up for what she believes in. She is quick-witted and likable. All the characters, including the bully, have a lesson to teach. There are numerous positive themes such as overcoming adversity, forgiveness, friendship and family bonds. The plot has sufficient conflict to keep the reader interested, but the ending is a little sloppy.
