The Forever Garden by Laurel Snyder, illustrated by Samantha Cotterill - ADVISABLE

Snyder, Laurel.  The Forever Garden, illustrated by Samantha Cotterill.  Schwartz & Wade Books (Random House), 2017.  $17.99.  Content: G.  PICTURE BOOK.
A lovely book about a little girl and her older next-door neighbor Honey.  Honey loves to garden; her knees are always in the mud.  She even sings to her kale.  She gives the little girl eggs that are green and speckled.  They even eat in her garden.  One day the little girl sees a For Sale sign in Honey’s yard.  Honey is moving.  The little girl is worried about Honey and her garden.  Honey explains that the garden will continue and maybe the new owners will plant something new.  Honey and the little girl plant an apple tree together.  Honey leaves and a new family moves in.  The little girl shows them how to garden and to sing to the kale.

The illustrations are warm and whimsical.  This book shows the special relationships children can have outside of their family with neighbors and friends.  Also, it shows that even though things change, friends move, some things can go on forever, like trees and gardens.
Pre-K, EL-ADVISABLE.  Samantha Hastings, MA, MLS.
