Ollie's Treasure by Lynn Jenkins - OPTIONAL

Jenkins, Lynn Ollie's Treasure, illustrated by Kirrili Lonergan. PICTURE BOOK. EK Books (Exisle Publishing), 2017. $17.99.

Ollie's grandmother sends him a treasure map in the mail. Eager to discover what the prize is at the end, Ollie jumps right into the instructions--looking up at the blue sky, hopping to a rose bush and smelling it, laying under a big tree. Inside the tree he finds his treasure and is initially upset to discover the big "prize" is just a note with a happy face. But then his grandma explains that the treasure was in the experience of the treasure hunt--smelling the flowers, feeling water, seeing the colors of the sky, etc. Ollie comes to understand that he controls his own happiness.

This is a book with an obvious agenda to set forth--mindfulness. I like the way the story teaches the concept of being aware of the moment, using our senses, etc. Its a pretty simple story but does its job well. How is it just as a fun picture book? Meh. The illustrations are nothing amazing and I still am not sure if Ollie is a fox, mouse, or wolf. For families or teachers looking to introduce mindfulness to their students, this is a great choice.
