When the World is Dreaming by Rita Gray- ADVISABLE

Gray, Rita. When the World is Dreaming, PICTURE BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016. $17.99.

Guesses and illustrations of what the forest animals are dreaming about are displayed in this book. The snake dreams that he or she is a kite tail. The tiny newt is an orange flower petal. The rabbit flies high in the sky on wings made of cabbage leaves. The small child pondering the animals’ dreams goes to sleep and dreams of having those same friends for company.

There is a soft lightness to the illustrations in this book. They depict the animal dreams well. It’s fun to see what the different animals could imagine themselves to be and prompts the reader to imagine other choices the child could have made about the dreams. This is a very mellow, sweet book. Definitely good for a night time read aloud.
