Shadow Run by Strickland and Miller - ESSENTIAL

Strickland, Adrianne and Michael Miller Shadow Run, 387 pages.  Delacorte (Random), 2017.  $18.  Langauge: PG-13 (33 swears, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: PG (passing mention of a gender fluid character); Violence: PG-13 (lots of death and fighting, some description).

Qole and her crew eke out a living mining for Shadow, a priceless and volatile energy source,  in the dangerous regions of space around her home planet.  When her newest crew member tries to kidnap her, she and the others put up a valiant fight.  Her would-be kidnapper, Nev, however is a prince, the heir to a vast interplanetary empire, and he is desperate to retrieve Qole to get her help in creating a safe version of Shadow.  Other dangerous enemies are out to grab Qole and kill Nev and subvert Nev’s family.  This can only end in death, heartbreak, and betrayal.

Strickland and Miller do a great job of balancing heart-stopping science fiction action with a little bit of romance, and a whole lot of intrigue.  While there is room for a sequel, I was certainly very happy with the conclusion.

MS – ADVISABLE; HS – ESSENTIAL.  Cindy, Library Teacher
