Samson in the Snow by Philip C. Stead- ADVISABLE

Stead, Philip C. Samson in the Snow, PICTURE BOOK. Roaring Book Press, 2016. $17.99.

Samson, the wooly mammoth, loves to tend his dandelion patch and enjoy the sunshine. One day, a little red bird comes along and asks Samson for some dandelions to cheer up her friend, who loves the color yellow. Samson happily agrees and then after, very lonely, wishes for a friend. He falls asleep and when he wakes up the world is covered in snow. He is worried about the little red bird and goes to search for her. On his way, he almost steps on a little mouse, whose favorite color happens to be yellow. They go on with the search together and find their friend.

This is a simply sweet book. The pictures are soft and give a great focus to the story. I really like the story and I like the pictures and I wanted to give this an “essential” rating, but I feel like it’s just missing some little oomph. I can’t pinpoint what it is, but it’s still a cute book and worth taking a minute for.
