The Magnificent Mya Tibbs: Spirit Week Showdown by Crystal Allen –ADVISABLE

Allen, Crystal The Magnificent Mya Tibbs: Spirit Week Showdown 226 pgs. Balzer and Bray (Harper Collins), 2016. $16.99 Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G Violence: G
Mya is a nine year old girl who is very excited about spirit week. If she is part of a winning team from her grade, she will win VIP tickets to the fall festival, which is very western, something she is very obsessed with. Mya and her best friend Naomi have a plan, but they have to be partners to accomplish it. Then Mya is assigned to work with the school bully, Connie, and not only is she heartbroken, but Naomi blames her and ends their friendship. Mya gets to know Connie and realizes that they might be coming friends, but she will do anything to get Naomi back. Will Mya be able to balance these friendships and win her VIP ticket?
This is a wonderfully written book about friendship and bullying, not only for Mya but her brother as well. It has a well crafted cast of memorable characters and some interesting subplots. It is a great additional to a realistic fiction collection. It seems like it could have been condensed just a bit more, felt a bit overly long, drawn out. The cover is appealing so that should bring in readers who will enjoy reading about a week in Mya’s life.
