The Great Spruce by John Duvall - OPTIONAL

Duvall, John  The Great Spruce Illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon  PICTURE BOOK  G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2016.  $17.99  Content: G.

A little boy loves to climb trees and his favorite is a big beautiful spruce tree that his grandpa has planted.  The tree is so beautiful that some men from the city ask the boy’s parents if they can cut it down and use it for the Christmas tree in the city.  The boy saves the tree and convinces the men to dig it out so it can be returned after Christmas.  It is decorated and celebrated and then returned to the boy’s home.

This book stirs a love for trees and it made me sad to think of all the trees that get cut down at Christmas time.  There is an author’s note at the end that describes how trees can be transferred with pictures and a history on the Rockefeller Christmas tree.  The illustrations are fun but it’s hard to tell how big the tree really is because it’s never depicted the same size.

EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
