Snow White by Matt Phelan-ADVISABLE

Phelan, Matt, Snow White. Pgs. 216. Candlewick Press, 2016. GRAPHIC NOVEL. Language: G, Mature Content: PG-13, Violence: PG-13

In 1918, Snow White’s mother passes away from Spanish flu. Ten years later, her father gets remarried to the latest star on Broadway. Soon, her stepmother gets an ominous message on her ticker tape magic mirror, and Snow’s father winds up dead.  Snow White flees, barely escaping with her life, thanks to a soft huntsman and a group of 7 guys. Her stepmother, however, is determined to do away with Snow. Will Snow figure out a way to stop her stepmother?

A beautiful retelling of Snow White. The illustrations are detailed, primarily black and white with a little bit of color here and there. The text and illustrations work well together to tell the story. The twist on the traditional mirror is interesting. The characters are engaging and intriguing. An excellent addition to reluctant reader collections, fans of graphic novel fairy tale retellings will enjoy reading this book. MS, HS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
