Preaching to the Chickens: The story of young John Lewis by Jabari Asim -NO

Asim, Jabari Preaching to the Chickens: The story of young John Lewis, Illustrated by Lewis, E.B. PICTURE BOOK. Nancy Paulsen (Penguin), 201. $17.99. Content: G
This is a the childhood of John Lewis, one of the leaders of the civil rights movement. We learn about his life on the farm, his love of church, and his special friendship with the family chickens. Accompanied by large water color illustrations that feel like real sunlight shining through the whole book.
With its heavy focus on religion (young John even baptizes the baby chicks) this book isn’t quite right for the school library. If this were part of a large biography about John Lewis, that would be perfectly acceptable or it could be used as part of a larger unit that focused on his entire life.  I would just rather buy an entire biography for a more balanced perspective. The illustrations are harmonious and easy to share with a group.
