Jane Addams was a wealthy woman who wanted to make a difference.  While visiting London in the late 1800s, she discovered a settlement house where the rich live among the poor teaching them the skills they need to become more self sufficient.  Jane came back to America and moved into a poor section of Chicago in a big house and started Hull House, which eventually grew into a huge complex, dedicated to helping the poor.  Hull House sponsored pre-school, cooking classes, a public bath, and more,

This picture book biography is short, with beautiful illustrations, a well told story an author’s note and source material for reading more about this amazing Nobel Prize winner.   This is a marvelous springboard for a biography unit.  Tell the short story, then discover more by going to the source materials.
