Black Hearts by Nicole Castroman -OPTIONAL

Castroman, Nicole Black Hearts 369 pgs. Simon Pulse 2016. $17.99 Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG13 Violence: PG
Edward "Teach" Drummond is a well off ship merchants son, set to marry a baron’s daughter, and to take over his fathers business. But his real dream is to return to adventures at sea. His father has a new maid, Anne, whom catches his attention. Anne has dreams of her own, to travel back to her mother’s homeland in the West Indies. To make this dream happen she has been stealing from the Drummond’s and squirreling away the money. As the pair discover each other and share their dreams, the world around them is moving too fast and catching up to them in ways they try to fight against.
This was very much a linear typical romance novel. Anne’s thieving was a big part of the plot, but I hope to read about female characters with a little more creativity and drive. There are hints of more than kissing, including a pregnancy, but nothing rated R. Spoiler Alert: I was shocked at the end to discover this was a Blackbeard the Pirate origin story, who knew? I found Edward to be a boring character. Didn’t feel like a teen book to me just not enough angst or fire.
